Somewhere in New Mexico

Well, we made it to Las Cruces about 5:30 this afternoon. I'll be going back to cover some of the trip down here later - it was a long journey.

We spent last night in Santa Fe, which resembles the outskirts of San Jose for the most part, with at least several instances of every fast food franchise and national motel chain represented along many miles of dismal strip malls. And yet, because the plaza and surrounding blocks remain quaint, the glossy local real estate magazines are full of 1.7 million dollar homes for sale. Go figure.

Taos, on the other hand, seems to still be a genuine representation of that Southwestern style that I have always associated with Northern New Mexico.

Tonight, after we got established at the motel in Las Cruces, we went out to explore a little at night. Found a great local hot dog place, then went to the old Mesilla district, which was very reminiscent of small Mexican villages we have visited. Also went to the old downtown of Las Cruces, which had an unfortunate makeover in the '60's or so.
