It's been a bad couple of weeks for anyone concerned about the future of the economy, and generally life as we have known it in the U.S.

James Kunstler's column is never all that rosy, but recently he has been sounding an especially alarming note. This week he expands on his theme of economic disaster evolving into political mayhem...

"...America has transformed itself from a nation of earnest, muscular, upright citizens to a land of overfed barbarous morons ruled by grifters."

Paul Krugman had a piece called America Goes Dark...

"America is now on the unlit, unpaved road to nowhere"

Paul Farrell, who used to be a pretty sedate mainstream market and financial columnist at Marketwatch had another scathing indictment of the destruction of our economy by both parties...

"We've arrived at a historic turning point as a nation that no longer needs outside enemies to destroy us, we are committing suicide."

Farrell seems to be growing increasingly bitter and cynical in his assessment of how the markets, policy makers, and economy have failed us in huge ways. I find him to be one of the more credible voices from that side of the spectrum.

Creepy. I'm inclined to continue focusing on the advice I see with increasing frequency - find land somewhere in a modest climate, with water and decent soil.
