I subscribe to a daily Buddhist wisdom mailing list. Today's offering arrives as I have found myself immersed once again in recollection about the old Camden house and all its delights. This seems to happen when I begin to despair that we are not moving closer to whatever is ultimately going to replace it.

Sometimes it seems that we are stuck in the temporary state. When it seems we are unable to move toward anything better, I find myself looking back at what we had before. Today's quote reminds me of the futility of hanging on to those images of past contentment.

All the delightful things of the world--sweet sounds, lovely forms, all the pleasant tastes and touches and thoughts--these are all agreed to bring happiness if they are not grasped and possessed.

But if you regard them merely as pleasures for your own use and satisfaction and do not see them as passing wonders, they will bring suffering.

-Sutta Nipata
